WG 6: Power Transmission and Distribution Systems

Overview

The main objective of Working Group (WG) 6 is to establish long-term visions for the development of sustainable power systems in the future. To achieve this, WG 6 identifies and addresses system-related challenges, focusing on the technologies, market solutions, and policies that contribute to developing system solutions.

WG 6 facilitates the sharing of knowledge related to the application of advanced technologies for power grids, as well as their contribution to clean energy, climate goals, and sustainable energy access for all. The results are disseminated at different strategic levels.

This work is carried out by a global network of researchers from universities and institutes, system operators, and policy experts.

WG 6 critically reviews the evolution of smarter and cleaner power transmission and distribution systems, focusing on four areas: expansion planning and market analysis, technology trends and deployment, system operation and security, and transmission and distribution system interaction. These focus areas support the continuity and long-term plans of the Working Group, which are carried out through well-defined activities and tasks included in the annual Programme of Work.
