The ISGAN Casebook on Smart Distribution Grid Planning showcases 15 innovative approaches from ten countries, highlighting how distribution grids can evolve to meet the challenges of electrification, renewable integration, distributed energy resources and growing uncertainty. The presentation explores real-world solutions spanning flexibility, dynamic grid connections, digital planning, smart-meter analytics, predictive asset management, microgrids and new collaboration models. Drawing on international experience, it identifies common success factors and barriers to implementation. The key message is clear: future-ready grid planning requires not only new technologies, but also better data, supportive regulation, stronger stakeholder cooperation and more flexible, forward-looking planning processes.

This webinar is part of the ISGAN LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT WEBINAR SERIES designed to disseminate knowledge and explore the full five-phase framework: Foresight and Strategic Decision Making Solutions, Long-Term Planning, Assessment & Decision Support, and Implementation.

Key messages

–  Grid planning is becoming more flexible, digital and active. Flexibility, DER control, smart-meter data and advanced planning tools help increase grid utilization and can defer conventional reinforcement.

–  Technology alone is not enough. Supportive regulation, clear actor roles, interoperable data exchange and close collaboration between DSOs, TSOs, regulators, customers and other stakeholders are essential.

–  Future grid planning must explicitly address uncertainty. Scenario-based and probabilistic approaches enable more robust, transparent and cost-efficient investment decisions under changing electrification, renewable and demand developments.
