ISGAN and GSGF Celebrate Global Excellence in Smart Grid Projects with special focus on ‘Smart Grids for Renewable Energy Integration’

Global Recognition

In 2015, ISGAN, in partnership with the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF) launched the second ISGAN Award of Excellence international competition to showcase leadership and innovation in smart grid projects around the world.
On May 27, 2015, ISGAN and GSGF announced the winners of the second Award of Excellence, during a special ceremony at the Sixth Clean Energy Ministerial in Mérida, Mexico. Miguel Arias Cañete, the European Commissioner, presented the ISGAN Award to the winning projects.
The Award of Excellence recognizes exemplars in the field of smart grid and helps improve global understanding of the value that smarter, cleaner electrical grids can offer with a special focus on renewable energy integration. It sets the stage for replication of proven smart grid concepts.

Competition at a Glance
For the 2nd Annual ISGAN Award of Excellence competition, a wide range of smart grid project nominations were received, representing projects from 12 different countries throughout the world. The winning projects were selected by an independent, international jury of smart grid experts, led by Dr. Ronnie Belmans, Executive Director of the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF). The jury selected the winning project based on four criteria: potential impact, system benefits, potential for replication, and level of innovation.
Competition Result
The 2015 ISGAN Award of Excellence, which focused on “Smart Grids for Renewable Energy Integration,” was awarded to GRID4EU Large-Scale Demonstration of European Smart Distribution Networks, a multi-national project from Europe.Two other projects were honored with the title “Honorable Mention”: DS3 – Delivering a Secure, Sustainable Electricity System from Ireland,and Smart Grid Station of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) from Korea. KEPCO’s Smart Grid Station was also honored with a GSGF Award, which recognized its tremendous potential for replication.
